CONTROL COUNCIL COSTS
Less use of consultants. Council managed to cut the budget for the Bridge St roundabout by 2/3rds by using in-house engineers for the design
Build relationships with outside funders to help pay for intergenerational assets like the Rex Morpeth sports complex
Capitalise on our relationships. A stronger voice in Wellington to help unlock Central Government funds
Using technology to boost productivity. We will make careful use of AI to free up staff for human-critical work
Effective leadership of council. By working as a team we can achieve more, including better governance oversight of council budgets.
We can’t stop rates increasing but we can make sure we spend wisely
INTERGENERATIONAL DECISIONS
Keep advocating for Pekatahi Bridge to be double-laned
Give the green light to housing development and work with land owners, developers and social housing providers
Prepare for climate change – ensuring infrastructure is robust and resilient, building community connections, championing innovation in the rural sector and town
Young people leave home to see the world. Let’s make Whakatāne District a place they want to come back to
Foster authentic relationships with tangata whenua for shared prosperity
THROW OPEN COUNCIL DOORS
Hold regular public meetings in the council chamber, where anyone can talk and ask questions
Hold council meetings around the district, at least once in each town
Re-establish mayor’s coffee mornings – a casual way to talk to the mayor and councillors and get the latest from the horse’s mouth
Empower Community Boards
